Rolando Sabino, ex-chief of security for President Ferdinand Marcos, dies from a cobra bite while climbing Mount Hikok-Hibok on Camiguin Island in the Philippines. When a secret autopsy conducted by Interpol reveals Sodium Pentothal in his system, it is determined that he is the most recent victim in a string of ritualistic snakebite murders committed over the past several years.
"Ang Ahas," (Tagalog for "The Snake") mysterious leader of an illicit organization composed of high-level government officials and military leaders in the US and the Philippines is responsible. The reason: - Million stolen from the organization in 1983, now conservatively worth billions. When the election of Corazon Aquino deposed the Marcos regime, funds being hastily moved from Philippine banks to Switzerland vanished without a trace. Recouping the loss is imperative if plans and preparations to covertly manipulate the world and its economy are to succeed.
The timely resignation of an obedient Philippine Senator, the impeachment or murder of President Joseph Estrada followed by the assassination of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, now the vice president, are all it will take for the chosen one of Ang Ahas to become President of the Philippines.
Stock manipulations necessary to make predictions publicly forecasted by underling of Ang Ahas on the US Federal Reserve Board come true are required. His reputation and national image must be enhanced to insure he is appointed the new Chairman when the organization assassinates Alan Greenspan.
Instigating the outbreak of hostilities between China, the Philippines and other nations off the hotly disputed Spratly Islands will cause money, arms and supplies to flood into the Philippines from the US. Many of these assets can be siphoned off as booty if the right person occupies Malacang Palace, the Philippine equivalent of the White House. However, none of this is possible without the missing funds!
Ang Ahas is convinced that Rolando was the thief and believes his twenty-eight year old Philippine/American daughter, Hannah Sabino, now has control of the money. For the global master plan to work, she must be taken captive and forced to make restitution.
Otto Belzer, a German Interpol Agent assigned to the case, and Hannah become lovers after he saves her from a kidnapping attempt by Seigo Iraki, a six-foot six-inch, three hundred fifty pound Japanese assassin in the employ of Ang Ahas. Otto tells Hannah all, including that the original Ang Ahas was Gene Cunningham, the supposedly deceased former US Deputy Ambassador to the Philippines and father of her close friend, Miss Dempsey Cunningham.
Interpol believes it is possible that Gene Cunningham faked his death by forcing a banded sea snake to bite a man of his description, placing his jewelry on the corpse and allowing it to drift ashore on the morning tide. Together, Hannah and Otto search for the missing money and attempt to identify, locate and capture Ang Ahas, her father's killer.
On the opposing side, Ang Ahas has promised to give Hannah to Seigo, revealed throughout the book as a sadist, to do with as he pleases after the desired information is obtained. It will not be the first time for the brutal behemoth. Seigo has starred in many underground rape and murder films produced and marketed by Ang Ahas, who also deals in drugs and the international slave market.
British Interpol Agent David Hayden is assigned to safeguard Hannah's American mother and Philippine grandmother in Cagayan de Oro, located in Mindanao in the southern Philippines. The three of them become close friends and there are many delightfully entertaining, multicultural exchanges. Ang Ahas implements plans to kidnap and use the ladies as tools in prying the missing money from Hannah and there are some very tense, thrilling moments.
As an unsuspecting world is pulled back from the brink of World War III, there is a sensational, "High Noon" ending with many surprises. - (Absolutely, 100% logical in retrospect.)
